Join world-renowned former Ailey dancer Sarita Allen for her signature Ailey Classics workshop in celebration of the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater’s performances at New York City Center.

This year, students are invited to learn excerpts of Alvin Ailey’s iconic ballet Memoria. Choreographed in 1979, Alvin Ailey’s Memoria is a deeply personal work and one of his most affecting as it was created in remembrance of his dear friend and colleague Joyce Trisler. He dedicated the ballet “to the joy…the beauty…the creativity…and the wild spirit of my friend,” and set it to the sublime music of jazz pianist Keith Jarrett.

Sarita Allen in Alvin Ailey's 'The Mooche'

About Sarita Allen

Hand-picked by Alvin Ailey, Sarita Allen was an original member of Alvin Ailey Repertory Ensemble, now Ailey II, before joining Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater a year later. In her first season with the Company, Mr. Ailey created lead roles for Allen in two Ellington premieres: The Mooche, opposite Ailey veterans Judith Jamison, Estelle Spurlock, and Sara Yarborough; and Night Creature. Allen went on to have a significant tenure with Ailey starring in leading roles and outstanding performances including galas at The Paris Opera, the Acropolis, the Great Pyramids of Giza, The Kennedy Center, and at the White House for two U.S. presidents.
