West African classes at Ailey Extension bring together body, mind, and spirit in an energetic union of music, dance, and the oral traditions of West African cultures. Every class is accompanied by live drumming to provide students with an understanding of the relationship between music and dance, the dancers' shared and syncopated rhythm becoming the common language they speak together.

Our classes are defined by the following so you can determine which level is best for you:

  • Abs Beg (Absolute Beginner)for students with little to no prior experience or knowledge of the technique.
  • Beg (Beginner): for students with a basic understanding of the fundamentals and foundations of the technique.
  • Adv Beg (Advanced Beginner): for students with prior experience and a more comprehensive understanding of the technique and vocabulary.
  • Int/Adv (Intermediate/Advanced): for students with extensive training and an expansive knowledge of the technique and its proper alignment.
  • Open: for students of any level.
