Alvin Ailey Dance Foundation, Inc. (AILEY) is seeking an experienced individual to serve as Assistant Stage Manager, reporting to the Production Stage Manager of Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater. 

This position is responsible for supporting and assisting the Production Stage Manager, Company Management, Production Crew, and the dancers of the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater. The position is seasonal with 43 guaranteed work weeks for the 2024-2025 season, and the candidate will need to be a member of the American Guild of Musical Artists (AGMA). The responsibilities of the position include, but are not limited to, assisting during rehearsal and performance weeks within the city of origination, domestic and international tour performances, and any special events.

Prior experience in a similar position is required and the ideal candidate must have a comprehensive knowledge and background in dance stage management. The candidate must exemplify strong communication, time management, and interpersonal skills. They must demonstrate a self-motivating, and dedicated work ethic and must be willing and able to carry out duties as needed, and to assist in ensuring a safe and positive environment.

Essential Job Responsibilities

  • Responsible for supporting the production and stage management department including documentation, organization, video archiving, and calling of repertory ballets.
  • Learn current and past repertory ballets.
  • Assist the Production Stage Manager with the creation and maintaining of accurate ballet information, including, but not limited to, calling of new ballets and for all ballets in the current repertory.
  • Assist the artistic staff with hiring teachers and accompanists for company class.
  • Maintain accuracy and submit teacher’s and accompanist’s timesheets for weekly payroll.
  • Assist with monitoring rehearsal times, attendance, and dancer sign-in sheets.
  • Additional duties may include focusing, placement, and direction of lights, scenery, sound, and properties as directed.
  • Assist the Production Stage Manager with the creation and distribution of paperwork, including run times, injury reports, daily schedules, casting, theater checklist, venue reports, and more as defined by the Production Stage Manager.
  • Supervise activities and personnel on the stage during all rehearsals, performances, and technical calls, including the starting and stopping of rehearsals.
  • Posting signage in theaters on tour and walking directions from hotel to the venue.
  • Maintain supplies for the first aid kit for onstage and rehearsal use.
  • Assist Company Management with air and bus travel while on tour, including, but not limited to, airport transfers and city-to-city travel when applicable.
  • Prepare the studios prior to rehearsals, including spike marks, rehearsal props, set up for musicians, etc.
  • Monitor and maintain office supplies for the production departments.
  • Maintain, and edit the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater video archives.
  • The responsibilities of this position are not limited to the above and also include other job duties and may be adjusted as needed as directed by the Production Stage Manager.
  • Several months of annual touring throughout North America.
  • Several weeks of annual touring internationally.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Three years of experience in Stage Management or production-related fields including live theater, touring dance, concerts, and/or other production experience.
  • Knowledge of dance vocabulary.
  • Experience working with stagehands in union and non-union environments.
  • Computer skills: Mac OS X, Windows OS, MS Office, Zoom, and Teams
  • Exceptional organizational and time management skills executed efficiently and with meticulous attention to detail.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, both verbal and written.
  • Ability to establish and maintain productive working relationships within multicultural and diverse environments.
  • Ability to take initiative, multi-task, collaborate, and work graciously in a fast-paced environment.
  • Ability to adapt to a wide range of venues and union environments maintaining the highest production standards.
  • Ability to work with diplomacy and tact, and remain calm under pressure.
  • Positively represent the company in all public places.
  • Must have a valid Passport.

Work Authorization/Security Clearance: Must pass criminal and child abuse background checks.

Compensation

Salary determined within the AGMA Collective Bargaining Agreement $2,002.64 per week. 

Benefits include AGMA health/dental insurance, 403(b) retirement plan, and savings on transit/parking.
